Day 19

Tropic to Escalante

Leaving Tropic I pass through Canonville and Henrieville. It's a cool and quiet glide through small farms on the way to Grand Staircase National Park.

There are some super steep climbs around here!

This section reminds me of Lombard St. in S.F.

At this viewpoint my bike takes a spill and my mirror breaks. It's so weird riding without it the rest of the way to Escalante!

The plaques at this viewpoint tell of all the ancient fossil findings in the canyon below.

Just outside of Escalante the wind really picks up and there's sand blasting all over the place so I leave the camera in it's case. 5 miles from town is an Airstream trailer park folks can stay at. Adjacent to the park is a drive-in movie theatre with classic cars you can sit and enjoy the film in.

Escalante is my final stop for the day.

Escalante has a few very intereting old brick homes and they're all boarded up and for sale.

At Escalante Outfitters I rent a cabin and meet two fellow cyclists. They started in Colorado Springs and are headed for Mesquite, NV. They usually ride til dusk and camp along the highway. Today they were caught in 50 mph winds and were lying behind their bikes for protection when a park ranger offered them a ride.
